Like every artist, I always wished I could do good watercolors. The opportunity to develop them as well as Sumi arrived with my son Pete. I decided to seal up my oil studio, as it was next to Pete’s nursery. The rapidity of execution of watercolors matched perfectly with the new time restraints of raising a child. Having to concentrate on Sumi and watercolor was a gift. The thrill of directing water, the most elemental and diverse of our planet’s attributes, is humbling. To watch it flow and settle as water, creating an image underneath that begins to pull and push on the surface as the water does. To erode and build on the picture plane. To move rapidly in three spatial dimensions and move in time to the fourth and fifth dimensions is the essence of creativity. To begin with the simplest and most ancients of tools and leap into the future with a brushstroke is inspirational. I’m presently painting watercolors with a feverish desire to explore the secrets and glories of water and paper.
