These paintings, viewable in any orientation, were developed at first as a breakthrough in the interior oils. Ready to paint a winter scene from and including the kitchen window, I yearned for something more. While pushing that notion out to include all the windows in the second floor of my house I grew tired - a sure sign that something bigger was cooking. I took a nap. The first painting came to me in that dream. I awoke refreshed and certain of the direction these new paintings had to take. The subsequent interiors have grown more intimate and all encompassing. They are still thrilling to construct and complete. The finished paintings still amaze me. They have a way of taking the viewer away. When you think you understand one particular view, turn the painting, and it's a brand new world. I experience that as I paint them and after they are signed. Trying to figure out where the images disappear still baffles me. Though I paint them, they remain a mystery to me in their totality. The landscapes developed from a session on the roof of my studio studying the surrounding landscape. I took large pieces of paper and black crayon. Taking 1/8th turns, I drew what was in front of me. In the studio later, I spread the drawings across a long table. That didn't do. Instinctively I cleared off a large wall and reconstructed the landscape in the circle that has become the 4-way Landscapes. They remain dense, thrilling and nearly unfathomable. |
